Boston Hair Restoration Surgeon Weighs In On Rising Demand For Treatment

A 2025 ISHRS member survey found that first-time hair restoration surgery patients in 2024 skewed younger than the general adult population, with 95% initiating surgery between the ages of 20 and 35.1 Dr. Matthew Lopresti, a hair restoration surgeon in Boston, says this trend reflects a broader shift in how people approach hair loss, with more patients addressing it proactively rather than waiting until later in life.

He notes that people are talking about hair loss more openly and learning that there may be options before it becomes advanced.

Dr. Lopresti highlights social media, more natural looking hair transplant results and greater awareness of non-surgical treatments as making the conversation feel less private or embarrassing.

Techniques Continue to Evolve

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) remains the most widely used surgical method, which Dr. Lopresti attributes to its faster healing time and lack of linear scarring compared to other techniques. At the same time, non-surgical approaches, such as PRP with ACell^® injection therapy, continue to draw patients who prefer to start with less invasive options, whether as a first step or as an ongoing part of managing hair loss.

“Having more choices is a good thing, but it can also be confusing,” Dr. Lopresti said. “The right treatment depends on the individual. What works well for one person may not be the right answer for someone else.”

Rather than waiting for hair loss to become advanced, Dr. Lopresti recommends seeking a professional evaluation when noticeable changes begin. An earlier conversation can help patients understand whether treatment is appropriate, what can realistically be achieved and how their hair loss may progress over time.
